Basel putting fans first

FC Basel have launched an initiative to promote a peaceful and positive culture among supporters.

FC Basel have launched an initiative to tackle violence and promote a peaceful and positive culture among the Swiss club’s supporters.

Action taken
Basel decided to take action after becoming concerned over the behaviour of some fans at UEFA Champions League and domestic matches. Marcus Meier, a 31-year-old social worker who has been involved in similar schemes in Germany, will head the project.

Cautionary note
Meier has urged fans not to expect rapid results, although the project is a step in the right direction. "We are facing a long-term task," he said. His main goal is to concentrate on emphasising the positive elements of Basel fans, while taking steps to help prevent violence.

Relationship needed
The three-year project will cost €170,000 a year and will be co-financed by the Basel canton and the club, who are hoping the new initiative will help bridge the gap with supporters' groups. "It is very difficult to talk to them," said Basel board member Gigi Oeri. "The meetings with the fan representatives did not bring any results."

Creditable displays
On the pitch, Basel have enjoyed an excellent season. In Europe, they have reached the second group stage of the Champions League although they have yet to register a point in the last 16 and sit bottom of Group D after two games.
