AEK Athens have signed Costa Rica's FIFA World Cup defender Mauricio Wright from CS Herediano.
Three-year deal
The 32-year-old attacking full-back, who played in all three of his country's group matches at the World Cup finals in Korea/Japan, has signed a two-year deal with the Athens club with an option for a further year. The signing will strengthen the Greek side as they prepare for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League next month.
Gomez recommendation
"I had offers from Turkey, Bulgaria, Italy and France and I chose AEK, partly on the recommendation of my friend and team-mate in the national team, Roland Gomez [the Costa Rican forward who also plays for OFI Crete]," said Wright during a press conference to announce his signing.
Second defensive arrival
Wright, who has scored five times in 44 internationals, is the second defender brought in by new coach Dusan Bajevic this summer following the arrival of experienced Dutchman Michel Kreek earlier in the summer. Wright will become the first Costa Rican to play in the Champions League should he appear in the competition for AEK.
