uefa.com Team of 2001: Right Midfielders

uefa.com users have been voting in huge numbers for the uefa.com users' Team of 2001. Voting continues until 30 December and this week the focus is mainly on midfielders. Read the profiles, view the video and have your say.

David Beckham (Manchester United FC and England)
The first name on our shortlist of right midfield players, Manchester United FC's David Beckham is arguably the continent's most famous player. A dead-ball specialist who possesses one of the most accurate crosses in the game, Beckham's achievements this year have seen him voted as runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Beckham has proved an inspirational captain of England, scoring three goals in their qualifying games this year, including the memorable free-kick against Greece that booked England's place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup final round in the dying seconds of their campaign.

Luis Figo (Real Madrid CF and Portugal)
The reigning European Footballer of the Year, Luis Figo has also been crowned FIFA World Player of the Year after another outstanding spell on the right side of midfield for club and country. His three goals in four first group stage appearances this season helped Real Madrid CF into the second stage of the UEFA Champions League, a tournament they are favourites to win. Figo's impressive wing play was also a feature of Portugal's unbeaten run to Korea/Japan, his goal in the Republic of Ireland securing a draw and, with it, top spot for the fancied Portuguese in their qualifying group.

Gianluca Zambrotta (Juventus FC and Italy)
Whereas the creative players in the centre of Juventus FC's midfield have long received plaudits, Gianluca Zambrotta's energy and industry attract less attention. Yet these qualities have made him an integral member of the Bianconeri side since his €15.85m move from AS Bari in 1999. Possessing tremendous speed and no small amount of skill, the 24-year-old is a fixture in the national side and could well be one of the players of the tournament if the Azzurri impress in the Far East next summer.

Michael Ballack (Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Germany)
Bayer 04 Leverkusen's standing as genuine contenders for a place in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League is owed in a large part to the outstanding contribution of Michael Ballack. He was also arguably the most important player as Germany managed to secure a place in the World Cup final round, scoring six goals in the qualifying series, including three against Ukraine in the play-off. The 25-year-old's elegant style, creativity and range of passing have prompted comparisons with Franz Beckenbauer. While the legendary libero is the face of a glittering past, Ballack is Germany's great hope for the future.

Hasan Salihamidzic (FC Bayern München and Bosnia-Herzegovina)
