'Unwell' Babbel out for month

Liverpool FC defender Markus Babbel is set to miss their first three UEFA Champions League matches, due to a mystery illness.

Immune system
The club’s website reports that right-back Babbel has been suffering from an illness that affects his immune system, and has not returned to the club after a recent break in Germany. He could be missing for a month.

Felt unwell
Babbel was substituted at half-time in both of Liverpool's opening FA Premiership fixtures against West Ham United FC and Bolton Wanderers FC, complaining he felt unwell.

Houllier concerned
The news has been greeted with disappointment by Liverpool coach Gérard Houllier. "It's a concern. It's a blow for him and for us,” he said. “He has been tremendous since he joined us, but we have a squad now."

Free transfer
Babbel joined Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2000 from FC Bayern München, having helped the German club to a domestic League and Cup double in his final season.
