Paris 1-1 Barcelona (agg: 5-2): Mbappé seals hosts' progress

Paris resisted first-half pressure to earn a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes and eliminate Barcelona 5-2 on aggregate in their round of 16 tie.

Match in brief

Barcelona's purposeful opening was understandable given their 4-1 first-leg reverse and Keylor Navas was tested twice by Ousmane Dembélé early on. But they fell behind when Clément Lenglet clipped Mauro Icardi and Kylian Mbappé converted the resulting penalty for his fourth goal of the tie.

Ronald Koeman's team responded impressively as Lionel Messi thumped in a glorious drive from distance and they would have led at the break had Navas not deflected the Argentinian's spot kick against the bar after Layvin Kurzawa fouled Antoine Griezmann.

Mauricio Pochettino's men heeded that warning, though, and were far more compact after half-time, Marquinhos epitomising their determination with a diving block to thwart Messi. A comeback never looked on the cards from that moment onwards as Barça's run of 13 straight quarter-final appearances came to a tame end.

Paris go through and the aggregate scoreline will suggest this was a one-sided contest. The first leg undoubtedly was, but here the French champions flirted with danger – if not outright disaster. Crucially, the key moments fell their way, Paris winning a penalty against the run of play, Navas saving one just before the interval, and the visitors unable to convert chances. Every successful team needs luck, but Pochettino surely hoped for a more controlled display after his side's Camp Nou heroics.

Although there will be psychological pain at departing the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 for the first time in 14 years, Paris have probably done Barcelona a favour with this win. Koeman has resculpted his team in a remarkably short space of time. They are quick, confident, dip in and out of playing systems and are fun to watch. But across these matches they've come up short physically, in concentration and in taking chances. Sort that out and Barcelona will be back for real.

Keylor Navas, Paris goalkeeper: "I'm very happy because it was a difficult match. We all wanted to play a great game and make the most of the first leg to qualify. It's always difficult to save a penalty – especially against Messi. It was a really great game from Barça. They pressed us the maximum possible. We're very motivated to continue in this competition and with this same spirit. That's what will help us improve to go far."

Marquinhos, Paris captain: "It was a difficult match. We knew the context would be different compared to the first leg. Since that game, Barça have been playing better. They had the courage to press very high and make it difficult for us to get the ball forward. You have to be able to cope. We were able to do that with the help of our great goalkeeper, who made the difference. We were better in the second half and we deserve this qualification."

Antoine Griezmann, Barcelona striker: "We've left a good impression here after a terrific performance. We had lots of goal chances, particularly in the first half, but we just didn't score them. I'd say there were four clear-cut opportunities plus the penalty. If you don't put them away it's harder later in the game. Nevertheless, it was a completely different contest than the first leg."
