She received the award at the first European Women's Football Gala ceremony, organised by Mundo Deportivo, Spain's oldest daily sports newspaper.
The sky is the limit
"I am humbled to receive a trophy that many people who have driven our game forward would have deserved," Kessler said. "The growth of the women's game is enormous, and it won't stop here. Every girl should have the right to enjoy the sport and the sky is the limit.
"It's now a sport that is part of the mainstream. Everyone discusses, cares and shows interest for it. The excitement is everywhere, the desire to develop women's football is everywhere and that’s what this game deserves."
