Late handball
With four minutes of added time having been played and the Italian side defending deep to preserve their lead, the Spaniards took full advantage of a handball in goalkeeper Antonio Maio's penalty area, with Oscar Pantin finishing from the spot.
Evenly matched
It was to be almost the last kick of a tense game which saw the two sides jostling for possession but rarely threatening to score in spite of being reasonable prolific in their UEFA Regions' Cup qualifying campaigns.
Goalless half
The first half ran contrary to all of the other games on day one of the competition, with the crowd at the Albstadion in Heidenheim having plenty of solid defensive football to watch but nothing in the way of goals.
First chances
It was not until early in the second half that there was any serious goalmouth action. After 54 minutes, Asturias' Alberto Martínez Morán tested the Italian side's goalkeeper with a good shot, but Antonio proved equal to it.
Bergantin goes close
Two minutes later, it was Asturias goalkeeper Alejandro Rebollo Cenal who was made to sweat as Marco Bergantin made contact with a cross, but his header drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Montalto scores
However, Rebollo Cenal's relief did not last for too long, as the Italian side took the lead after 65 minutes. Bergantin went down in the area, a penalty was awarded, and Danilo Montalto scored his fifth goal of the competition from the spot.
Defensive policy
That goal was the cue for Michele Delvecchio's side to shut up shop, but as Piemonte aimed to hold them at bay, the Spanish pressed forward remorselessly. Pantin was inches wide with a header after 85 minutes, but he was to have the final say as his penalty levelled the scores.
