Switzerland goalkeeper Diego Benaglio hopes to boost his chances of being his country's No1 at UEFA EURO 2008™ by leaving CD Nacional for Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.
'Great potential'
The 24-year-old had been in Portugal for two and a half years, making 69 Liga appearances for Nacional and scoring against A. Académica de Coimbra last March. However, with Pascal Zuberbühler and Fabio Coltorti also targeting the Switzerland No1 shirt, Benaglio has opted to join Wolfsburg, where coach Felix Magath has said he will supplant first choice Simon Jentzsch. "Diego will be our No1," said Magath, who worked with the goalkeeper at VfB Stuttgart. "He wants to improve and is perfect for us. I am convinced he can be our No1 from the off. He is a young but by no means rookie keeper with great potential."
Germany return
Benaglio, who was at Stuttgart between 2002 and 2005 but failed to make a senior appearance, added: "It has always been my wish to play in the Bundesliga and I'm delighted to get this chance. I'm sure the conditions in Wolfsburg are the best to further my development. It was also decisive that I already know Felix Magath." The custodian, Switzerland's third choice at the FIFA World Cup in Germany, now has eight caps following his debut against China in June 2006.
