Transfer round-up: 17-23 January

Into the third week of the European domestic transfer window, UEFA.com will keep you posted with stories on all the major signings involving clubs in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, while keeping track of other significant moves in this regularly updated transfer round-up.

Abdoulay Konko has rejoined Genoa CFC from Sevilla FC for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old right-back moved to the Liga club in 2008 in a €9m deal to replace Daniel Alves. Konko, who started his career with Juventus before spells with FC Crotone and AC Siena, scored three goals in 44 league appearances for Sevilla.

Federico Almerares has signed for Neuchâtel Xamax FC from FC Basel 1893. The 25-year-old striker, who becomes the second Basel player in six months to head Xamax's way following the decision of fellow Argentinian Marcos Gelabert, has penned a deal that will tie him to the Swiss club until 2014.

Bulgarian side PSFC Chernomorets Burgas have taken ACF Fiorentina striker Savio Nsereko on loan until the end of the season. The 21-year-old helped Germany win the 2008 UEFA European Under-19 Championship and this is his third loan spell since joining the Viola from West Ham United FC in summer 2009. Savio, whose new club are fourth in Bulgaria and recently replaced coach Krasimir Balakov with Anton Velkov, said: "My aim here is to achieve the club's targets. Sometimes players must do something different to reach their goals."

Scotland striker Kenny Miller has completed his move from Rangers FC to Turkish champions Bursaspor on a two-and-a-half year contract for a reported €470,000. Miller, 31, joins the club against whom he scored in Rangers' 1-1 UEFA Champions League draw in Bursa last month. He totalled 57 goals in 111 top-flight appearances – including a league-leading 21 this term – for the Glasgow side, winning two Scottish titles. "Bursaspor playing in the Champions League again is the target and I will do my best to win the league and get to the Champions League again," said Miller, whose new team are five points behind Turkish leaders Trabzonspor.

Norwegian striker John Carew has joined Stoke City FC on loan for the remainder of the season in the wake of Aston Villa FC signing Darren Bent from Sunderland AFC. The 31-year-old Carew is out of contract at the end of the season, and is set to replace Ricardo Fuller, himself earmarked to fill Bent's boots at Sunderland. Stoke manager Tony Pulis said: "This is a fantastic signing. John's record speaks for itself because he has scored goals at the highest level throughout his career."

Slovakia striker Erik Jendrišek has left UEFA Champions League contenders FC Schalke 04 for their Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg in a €900,000 deal. The 24-year-old struggled for first-team opportunities in Gelsenkirchen and has agreed a contract running until summer 2013 with Freiburg, who sit sixth in the table. "He is a pacy and dangerous striker," said Freiburg coach Robin Dutt, "and I also have the impression that he fits into the team as a person as well."

Former England Under-21 defender David Wheater has moved to Bolton Wanderers FC from second-tier side Middlesbrough FC. The 23-year-old moves for a €2.7m fee that could rise to €4.5m with appearances. Bolton currently lie seventh in the Premier League.

UC Sampdoria have signed midfielder Zsolt Laczkó from Debreceni VSC. Laczkó, 24, joined the Hungarian titleholders in August 2009 from Vasas SC and helped them to the domestic double in his first season. He featured in five UEFA Europa League Group I games this term, including two against Sampdoria, as both sides failed to reach the round of 32.

Joel Ekstrand has left Helsingborgs IF for Udinese Calcio on a four-and-a-half year deal. The 21-year-old centre-back, capped once by Sweden, has been at Helsingborg since a 2005 move from home-town club Lunds BK and said: "It feels sad to leave the club that I love, but incredibly inspiring to get the chance to play in one of Europe's best leagues." Helsingborg added: "Our sale of Joel will be counted among the best transfers that HIF have been involved in the last decade."

Serie A high-fliers S.S. Lazio have signed forward Giuseppe Sculli from Genoa for a reported fee of €3.5m. A 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship winner, Sculli, 29, has penned a contract until 2015. In his place at Genoa comes 27-year-old striker Antonio Floro Flores on loan from Udinese with an option to sign on a permanent basis in the summer.

United States midfielder Jermaine Jones has gone on loan to Blackburn Rovers FC from Schalke for the rest of the season. The 29-year-old, the Premier League club's second January loan signing after striker Roque Santa Cruz, has been at Schalke since 2007.

Fiorentina have signed goalkeeper Neto from Brazilian club CA Paranaense for a reported €3m fee. The 21-year-old, who was called up by his national team for a friendly in September but is yet to make his Brazil debut, has signed a contract until 2016 with the Viola.

Meanwhile, Belarus goalkeeper Sergei Veremko has left UEFA Europa League contenders FC BATE Borisov to join Ukrainian side PFC Sevastopol on a two-and-a-half year contract. The five-times capped 28-year-old said: "I wanted to switch gears. I do not see any challenges left for me in Belarus. I thought for a week or so and finally decided to test myself in Ukraine once again." Veremko previously played in Ukraine with FC Arsenal Kharkiv from 2002-06.
