Messi shines again as Barcelona claim Super Cup

FC Barcelona have won the Spanish Super Cup for the tenth time after Lionel Messi scored twice in a 3-2 home win against Real Madrid CF, earning the European champions a 5-4 aggregate victory.

Messi, who was on target in the first leg, scored in either half after Cristiano Ronaldo had cancelled out Andrés Iniesta's early opener, Karim Benzema having levelled the tie with nine minutes to go. In a tempestuous finale, Marcelo, Mezut Özil and David Villa were all dismissed.

Madrid began on the front foot and almost took the lead inside the opening 40 seconds, Ronaldo finishing a move he started with a fierce strike that Víctor Valdés repelled. The hosts broke the deadlock when Messi split the Madrid rearguard with a delightful through ball and Iniesta clipped past the advancing Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo equalised from close range by turning in a shot from Benzema, but Barça were soon threatening again, Pedro this time racing goalwards before checking back on to his left foot and curling a 20-metre effort Casillas clawed away from the top corner.

Valdés then pushed Ronaldo's powerful strike against the bar on 25 minutes and denied Özil after the German international fired low to his left. The Azulgrana restored their lead on the stroke of half-time when Messi reacted first to a loose ball in the area, received a back-heeled return pass from Gerard Piqué and dinked a smart shot into the net.

José Mourinho's charges drew level thanks to Benzema, who turned in the loose ball following a corner. With the game heading for extra time, Barcelona surged forward once more, and Messi expertly volleyed in Adriano's cross for his 13th goal in 15 Clásico encounters. In a fraught finish, Marcelo was shown a red card for a foul on debutant Cesc Fàbregas, before Villa and Özil were also dismissed in the ensuing melee.
