Chelsea FC's Eden Hazard has been voted the player of the year by England's Professional Footballers' Association, Tottenham Hotspur FC striker Harry Kane collecting the young player award.

Hazard was selected by a poll of professional footballers after a season in which he has so far scored 13 Premier League goals and provided eight assists to help Chelsea close in on the title. The Belgian, who won the young player of the year award in 2013/14, said: "I'm very happy. One day I want to be the best and what I did this season is play very well – Chelsea played very well.

"I don't know if I deserve to win but it is good for me," Hazard added. "It is better to be voted by the players – they know everything about football. I've had a good season, I have been there in the big games and I scored a lot of important goals – that's why I'm better this season."

Kane, meanwhile, has scored 30 goals in all competitions for Tottenham this season and also found the net on his England debut against Lithuania last month. "It is amazing, a very proud moment for myself and my family," said Kane.

"I have got to keep working hard, but to be recognised by your fellow players is something special and it is a night I won't forget. I got the opportunity with the gaffer and I have really enjoyed my season so far; I've taken my chance."

Chelsea midfielder Ji So-Yun took the women's award with Arsenal LFC's Leah Williamson named the women's young player of the year.
