John Buttigieg: My team of 2014

Former Malta coach John Buttigieg has included five members of Germany's FIFA World Cup-winning side in his Team of the Year 2014.

Buttigieg, who earned 97 caps for Malta between 1987 and 2000, also picks three players who lifted the 2014 UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid CF, while his attack features a forward who "shows his class year after year" and another who is "the best player in the world".

Manuel Neuer: A world champion, a leader and an extra player who, with his feet, can play the ball like a defender.

Jérôme Boateng: A reliable defender who can easily operate on the flanks as well in the middle of a back four. Another world champion.

Diego Godín: A strong central defender with the ability to score goals from corners and set pieces.

Mats Hummels: Another world champion, technically gifted and with the ability to go forward with the ball at his feet.

Philipp Lahm: Can play anywhere with ease and captained Germany to their fourth World Cup.

Xabi Alonso: Playing in front of the defence means he can keep a good balance in the team.

Marco Reus: One of the best young midfielders around, he already has plenty of experience and scores a lot of goals.

Luka Modrić: Gives the team a lot of flair and passing options. The ball is always safe at his feet.

Thomas Müller: Another hero of the 2014 World Cup, he scores goals but always works hard as well and helps out in defence. Never stops running.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Year after year he keeps showing his class. Makes the difference for his team with his attacking play, assists and goals.

Lionel Messi: The best player in the world. Football is lucky to have a player like him.
