Reghecampf steps down as Steaua coach

Laurențiu Reghecampf has left his role as coach of Romanian champions FC Steaua București in order to take charge of Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal.

Negotiations for Reghecampf to be released from his contract, which had 12 months to run, were initiated by the ex-Steaua player, who has agreed a two-year deal with the Middle Eastern side. Reghecampf was appointed by the Army Men in July 2012, guiding the team to successive 1. Liga titles and one domestic Super Cup.

"I managed to achieve something important at Steaua, but at the moment I don't think I'm capable of finding that little bit more to motivate the players," said Reghecampf, who suffered only four defeats in 68 league games at the helm. "I did nothing but perform at this club and that's what I want to stay in the memory of our fans. We achieved fantastic things together."

Reghecampf's last match in charge of the 1986 European champions was the Romanian Cup final, which Steaua lost 4-2 on penalties to league runners-up FC Astra Giurgiu following 120 goalless minutes. Under the former midfielder, Steaua also reached the UEFA Europa League round of 16 in 2012/13 and last term progressed from the second qualifying round to the UEFA Champions League group stage.
