Falcao plundered his 25th Liga goal of the season as Club Atlético de Madrid edged out Sevilla FC 1-0 and strode 13 points clear of fourth-placed Real Sociedad de Fútbol, who were held to a goalless draw by CA Osasuna.
In a contest that was slow to catch fire, Falcao almost inevitably lit the fuse with 14 minutes remaining, turning in Raúl García's volley with the base of his studs. The hosts toiled in vain to recover as Thibaut Courtois denied Álvaro Negredo with a sprawling save before the on-loan Chelsea FC goalkeeper tipped Ivan Rakitić's rasping free-kick on to the crossbar.
Elsewhere, RCD Espanyol moved into tenth place courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Getafe CF, with Joan Verdú and Christian Stuani both on target, while RC Deportivo La Coruña and Athletic Club played out a 1-1 stalemate.
