RSC Anderlecht forward Matías Suárez has been named as the 2011/12 Belgian First League player of the season.
The 24-year-old received the annual award on Sunday afternoon after being voted as the division's best performer by his fellow top-flight professionals. Suárez succeeds former Club Brugge KV forward Ivan Perišić, now at Borussia Dortmund, with KRC Genk midfielder Kevin De Bruyne voted second and Anderlecht team-mate Dieudonné Mbokani in third.
"I am very satisfied," said Suárez. "It was a good season, with the championship for Anderlecht and this important trophy for me. I have shown some good things this season, but I'll especially remember the championship for a long time. I cannot say yet if I will still be at Anderlecht next season."
KV Kortrijk's Hein Vanhaezebrouck was elected coach of the season, with Anderlecht’s Silvio Proto singled out as the pick of the division's goalkeepers.
