Prior to his election, Åström served as president of Svensk Elitfotboll, the organisation representing the clubs in the top two tiers of Swedish men's football, since 2022, having previously been managing director of Örebro SK.

The 42-year-old identified three priority areas under his presidency:

  • Keeping as many players as possible active in football, for as long as possible
  • Developing strong club and national teams
  • Make use of being Sweden's biggest popular movement

"I would like to express a big and humble thanks for the support shown in me. Working together, creating a sense of shared involvement and jointly moving football in one direction, that is where I will have my focus," Åström said.
