Netherlands and Türkiye are both in a first UEFA European Championship quarter-final for 16 years as they meet in the final last-eight tie of UEFA EURO 2024 at Berlin's Olympiastadion.
Neither side has made it this far since EURO 2008, when the Netherlands lost to Russia in extra time while Türkiye memorably edged out Croatia on penalties to reach their only semi-final in the competition to date.
The Dutch cruised into the last eight of EURO 2024 with a 3-0 defeat of Romania at the Munich Football Arena on 2 July, Donyell Malen's late double adding to Cody Gakpo's first-half strike. Later the same day, Merih Demiral got both Türkiye goals against Austria at the Leipzig Stadium, thought it needed a superlative last-gasp stop from Mert Günok to preserve a 2-1 victory.
Türkiye had finished second behind Portugal in Group F, beating Georgia 3-1 and Czechia 2-1 either side of a 3-0 loss to the section winners. The Netherlands, meanwhile, were third in Group D, opening with a 2-1 comeback victory against Poland but subsequently taking only one point from games against France (0-0) and Austria (2-3).
The winners of this tie face England or Switzerland in the semi-final in Dortmund on 10 July.

The sides' last fixtures came in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying competition, each recording a home victory.
A Burak Yılmaz hat-trick inspired Türkiye to a 4-2 win in Istanbul on 24 March 2021, Hakan Çalhanoğlu also on target with substitutes Davy Klaassen and Luuk de Jong replying for the Netherlands.
It was even more emphatic in Amsterdam on 7 September 2021, Louis van Gaal's Netherlands running out 6-1 winners with Memphis Depay hitting a hat-trick. Klaassen, Guus Til and fellow replacement Donyell Malen provided the other goals, the sole reply for a Türkiye team coached by Şenol Güneş an added-time consolation from Cengiz Ünder.
The teams' sole previous European Championship meetings came in qualifying for EURO 2016. An added-time Klaas-Jan Huntelaar strike had rescued a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam for Guus Hiddink's Netherlands, Burak Yılmaz having opened the scoring in the first half for Fatih Terim's Türkiye; it was subsequently 3-0 to the home side in Konya thanks to goals from Oğuzhan Özyakup, Arda Turan and Burak Yılmaz again.
The Dutch won 2-0 in both Amsterdam and Istanbul in the 2014 World Cup qualifying competition, Robin van Persie scoring in the first game and Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder in the second.
Current Oranje coach Ronald Koeman captained the Netherlands in their first competitive games against Türkiye, in the 1994 World Cup qualifying competition. Each game finished 3-1 to the Dutch, Peter van Vossen scoring twice and Ruud Gullit once in Istanbul before Marc Overmars' opener was added to by Rob Witschge's double in Utrecht; Feyyaz Uçar scored in both games for Türkiye.
Türkiye were 1-0 winners at home to the Netherlands in a 1998 World Cup qualifier in April 1997, Hakan Şükür scoring the only goal. The Amsterdam return finished goalless.
The teams' last friendly was a 1-0 Netherlands win in Amsterdam in November 2010, Huntelaar scoring the only goal early in the second half.
Overall, the sides have one friendly win apiece with two goalless draws.
EURO facts
Netherlands
This is the Netherlands' 11th EURO appearance, their most famous campaign coming in 1988 when goals from Gullit and Marco van Basten earned a team coached by Rinus Michels a 2-0 final win against the Soviet Union.
The Dutch are making their ninth appearance in the last ten editions of the tournament, missing out only in 2016.
At EURO 2020, under Frank de Boer, the Netherlands were first in Group C on nine points after wins against Ukraine (3-2), Austria (2-0) and North Macedonia (3-0), but then lost 2-0 to Czechia in the round of 16.
With Koeman – a European champion as a player in 1988 – returning for his second spell in charge from 1 January 2023, the Netherlands qualified for EURO 2024 as Group B runners-up. Beaten 4-0 away and 2-1 at home by section winners France, they triumphed in their other six games, a 1-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland in Amsterdam in their penultimate qualifier confirming a finals place.
The Oranje lost four of their ten games in 2023, winning the other six, but the Matchday 3 defeat by Austria is one of only two in eight matches in 2024 (W5 D1). A 2-1 friendly loss to Germany in Frankfurt on 26 March is their only other reverse in their last 11 outings, and one of only three they have not won.
Gakpo was one of four players to have scored three EURO 2024 goals ahead of the quarter-finals.
The Dutch have progressed from the group stage eight times out of ten, including on eight of their last nine appearances.
The Netherlands' record in European Championship quarter-finals is W3 L2:
1976 7-1 v Belgium (agg; 5-0 h, 2-1 a)
1996 0-0 v France (aet, 4-5 pens)
2000 6-1 v Yugoslavia
2004 0-0 v Sweden (aet, 5-4 pens)
2008 1-3 v Russia (aet)
The 6-1 win against Yugoslavia in 2000 is the joint largest margin of victory in a EURO finals match.
The Oranje are looking to reach the European Championship semi-finals for the sixth time – and the first since 2004.
The Matchday 3 defeat by Austria was the Netherlands' first game at the Olympiastadion.
Türkiye
Türkiye are making their sixth EURO appearance and a third in succession.
They have been knocked out in the group stage in their last two appearances but memorably made it to the semi-finals in 2008, when they lost 3-2 to Germany in a thriller.
Türkiye's sole other knockout appearance came in 2000, when they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Portugal (0-2) having made their tournament debut four years earlier.
Şenol Güneş oversaw Türkiye's EURO 2020 campaign, his side finishing bottom of Group A without a point having lost to Italy (0-3), Wales (0-2) and Switzerland (1-3).
Stefan Kuntz took charge for the start of EURO 2024 qualifying, departing on 20 September 2023 with his side second in Group D. Montella was named as his replacement the following day and picked up seven points from his three qualifiers, Türkiye sealing their finals place with a 4-0 victory at home to Latvia on 15 October and securing top spot with a 1-1 closing draw in Wales.
Türkiye finished with 17 points in the section (W5 D2 L1), one above runners-up Croatia.
The three victories at EURO 2024 are a new best for Türkiye, who have recorded more than one victory at a EURO final tournament only once previously, the other their run to the 2008 semi-finals, when they also won two group games.
Having won six of their ten games in 2023, losing only two, Montella's team came into EURO 2024 without a victory in five matches (D2 L3).
Türkiye's record in EURO quarter-finals is W1 L1:
2000 0-2 v Portugal
2008 1-1 v Croatia (aet, 3-1 pens)
The 2-1 defeat of Austria in the round of 16 was Türkiye's first EURO knockout victory outside of a penalty shoot-out.
Türkiye were 3-2 winners at the Olympiastadion on 18 November 2023, goals from Ferdi Kadıoğlu, Kenan Yıldız and Yusuf Sarı earning a friendly victory against Germany. That made their record at the ground W2 L2; they won 2-1 against West Germany in a June 1951 friendly but lost to the same opponents in European Championship qualifying in October 1983 (1-5) and October 2010 (0-3).
