The group stage of UEFA EURO 2024 came to a thrilling conclusion on Wednesday night, and the knockout phase is now set. The first two weeks of the competition in the ten host cities have shone a spotlight on the popularity of the tournament not only in Europe but around the world.
Let's take a closer look at some of the numbers EURO 2024 has generated off the pitch so far.
Fan zones
The ten host city fan zones throughout Germany were attended by over 3.3 million people during the group stage. These fan zones offer a variety of engaging activities, appealing to football fans and casual visitors alike, including families, young adults and children. The mini-pitches have proved especially popular, consistently filled with both kids and adults.
The highest attendance dates thus far have been 19 June and 23 June, boasting total figures across all fan zones of 430,000 and 440,000 respectively.
Television audiences
EURO 2024 has been setting records for TV audiences in the countries of the participating teams, while global interest in the competition remains sky-high as the tournament remains on course to achieve a global cumulative audience in excess of 5 billion viewers.
Social media
EURO 2024 has social media abuzz, with official EURO social media channels on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and WhatsApp attracting more than 7.5 million new followers during the group stage, taking the total number of followers beyond 66 million. These channels have accumulated over 145 million engagements and 1.35 billion video views – more views than the whole of EURO 2020, with the drama of the knockout phase still to come.
Ticketing and match attendance
As previously announced, 85% of the 2.7 million tickets have been made available to the general public and fans of the teams, ensuring that massive crowds from all over the world have been celebrating EURO 2024 in a spectacular atmosphere. Indeed, more than 1.8 million spectators attended group stage games across the ten stadiums.
For the first time in European Championship history, 100% of the tickets were distributed digitally via the official UEFA Mobile Tickets app.
Tickets for the knockout rounds are being sold to supporters of the participating sides, as agreed with the respective national associations. Fans should also keep an eye on euro2024.com/tickets for any potential ticket releases to the general public. Official hospitality sales packages can still be purchased via 2024-hospitality.com.
UEFA reminds supporters to refrain from purchasing tickets on the secondary market. Tickets purchased from unauthorised third parties, websites or agencies, as well as on social media sites or from touts, may be cancelled by UEFA at any time and fans are likely to be refused entry or ejected from the stadium.
Environmental, social, governance
The primary goal of significantly reducing the air travel of the competing teams has so far been achieved thanks to close cooperation with the relevant national associations. The group stage brought a 75% decrease in the number of flights taken by the participating sides compared with the 2016 edition, with more squads using buses and trains.
Fans have also travelled sustainably around Germany, supported by a partnership with Deutsche Bahn, which has sold over 200,000 EURO 2024 tickets at reduced prices. More than 500,000 Fan Pass Users have activated their public transport tickets to get around the host cities and their surroundings.
Meanwhile, the expanded audio-descriptive commentary (ADC) service has received over 18,000 total unique visitors. This is the first EURO to feature ADC in the languages of the competing teams, as well as in German.
Lastly, UEFA has monitored 622 social media accounts operated by all the parties involved in the tournament, including players, coaches and the participating sides.
By the end of the group stage, 308 social media posts were found eligible to be reported to the social media platforms for removal. As of today, 71% of these abusive posts have been actioned by the platforms, with reported posts removed after an average of just 75 minutes.
