Having snatched first place in Group D, Austria will look to extend their UEFA EURO 2024 campaign when they take on Türkiye at the Leipzig Stadium in the final round of 16 tie – although their opponents are in equally buoyant mood.

Ralf Rangnick's side finished ahead of France and the Netherlands in their section and now face opponents against whom they scored six goals a little over three months ago.

Austria's EURO 2024 prospects were in the balance after an opening 1-0 defeat by France but wins against Poland (3-1) and the Netherlands (3-2), Marcel Sabitzer scoring an 80th-minute winner in the latter game, took them through as section winners.

Türkiye began their Group F campaign with an impressive 3-1 win against debutants Georgia but then went down 3-0 against section winners Portugal. However, they regrouped quickly to see off ten-man Czechia in their final fixture, a 94th-minute Cenk Tosun goal ensuring Vincenzo Montella's side finished second in the standings.

The winners will play Romania or the Netherlands in the quarter-finals in Berlin on 6 July.

The teams met in a friendly at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on 26 March, Austria recording a remarkable 6-1 victory. Xaver Schlager's fourth-minute opener for the home side was cancelled out by Hakan Çalhanoğlu's penalty in the 25th minute, but Austria did not look back after Michael Gregoritsch restored their lead a minute before half-time. Gregoritsch had a hat-trick before the hour (48, 59pen) and Christoph Baumgartner made it five from the spot with 12 minutes left. There was still time for substitute Maximilian Entrup to add a sixth five minutes into added time, his first international goal.

That was a third successive Vienna friendly between the sides, Türkiye having won 2-1 in March 2016 – Çalhanoğlu scoring their first goal – after a 2-0 Austria success in August 2012 thanks to goals in the first six minutes from Veli Kavlak and Andreas Ivanschitz, the latter a penalty.

Ten of the teams' previous 11 meetings had come in either qualifying for the FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship, Türkiye winning 2-0 in Istanbul and drawing 0-0 in Vienna in the EURO 2012 preliminaries.

The first five games between the sides all finished 1-0 – including home and away Austria wins in 1978 World Cup qualifying – before Austria triumphed 4-0 in Vienna in the 1984 European Championship qualifying competition. Türkiye won 3-1 in the Istanbul return before the countries swapped home successes in 1990 World Cup qualifying – 3-2 in Austria and 3-0 in Türkiye.

The most significant games between the teams before EURO 2024 came in November 2001, Türkiye reaching the 2002 World Cup finals with a play-off victory against Austria. Okan Buruk scored the only goal of the first leg at the Ernst Happel Stadion on 10 November and was also on target in the return four days latter, making it 3-0 in the 45th minute after Yıldıray Baştürk (21) and Hakan Şükür (31) had stretched the advantage. Two second-half strikes from Arif Erdem (69, 85) completed a 5-0 win on the night and 6-0 aggregate triumph for Türkiye, who went on to finish third in the final tournament in Japan/South Korea.

EURO facts

Austria

Co-hosts with Switzerland in 2008 – their EURO debut – Austria are featuring in the tournament for the fourth time and the third in succession.

EURO 2020 proved to be their most successful campaign to date, a side coached by Franco Foda finishing second in Group C, behind the Netherlands but ahead of Ukraine and North Macedonia, to reach the knockout stages for the first time. Their campaign was ended by a 2-1 extra-time defeat by eventual champions Italy at Wembley in the round of 16.

Austria had never won a match at a EURO before the last tournament, when they managed victories against both North Macedonia (3-1) and Ukraine (1-0) in the group stage. Their record in the finals is now W4 D2 L7.

With Rangnick appointed as Foda's successor in April 2022, Austria won six of their eight EURO 2024 qualifiers, losing only one – 3-2 at home to Belgium – to finish second in Group F on 19 points, one behind the Belgians. They qualified with a 1-0 victory in Azerbaijan in their penultimate fixture, on 16 October.

That loss to Belgium was Austria's only defeat in 2023; their record otherwise was W7 D2.

Rangnick's side have won 14 of their last 19 matches, losing only two.

After no wins in their first six EURO finals matches (D2 L4), Austria have now managed four victories in their last seven games in the tournament, losing the other three.

This is only the second time Austria have progressed from the group stage at a EURO, and the first time as group winners.

Austria's six goals at EURO 2024 have all been scored by different players.

The 2-1 extra-time defeat by Italy at Wembley at EURO 2020 – a game in which all three goals came in the 30 additional minutes – is Austria's sole previous EURO knockout tie.

Austria have played three previous matches in Leipzig, all World Cup qualifiers against East Germany with the record D2 L1 – a 1-0 defeat in the 1966 preliminaries and 1-1 draws ahead of the finals of 1978 and 1990.

Türkiye

Türkiye are making their sixth EURO appearance and a third in succession.

They have been knocked out in the group stage in their last two appearances but memorably made it to the semi-finals in 2008, when they lost 3-2 to Germany in a thriller.

Türkiye's sole other knockout appearance came in 2000, when they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Portugal (0-2) having made their tournament debut four years earlier.

Şenol Güneş oversaw Türkiye's EURO 2020 campaign, his side finishing bottom of Group A without a point having lost to Italy (0-3), Wales (0-2) and Switzerland (1-3).

Stefan Kuntz took charge for the start of EURO 2024 qualifying, departing on 20 September 2023 with his side second in Group D. Montella was named as his replacement the following day and picked up seven points from his three qualifiers, Türkiye sealing their finals place with a 4-0 victory at home to Latvia on 15 October and securing top spot with a 1-1 closing draw in Wales.

Türkiye finished with 17 points in the section (W5 D2 L1), one above runners-up Croatia.

This is only the second time Türkiye have recorded more than one victory at a EURO final tournament, the other their run to the 2008 semi-finals, when they also won two group games.

Having won six of their ten games in 2023, losing only two, Montella's team came into EURO 2024 without a victory in five matches (D2 L3).

This is Türkiye's first game in Leipzig.
