Capped nine times by his nation, Šarkić passed away suddenly on the morning of 15 June.

"Matija left a big mark, which was yet to become part of a bigger and more beautiful story. Premature death stopped that and caused great pain to the Šarkić family," said the Football Association of Montenegro in a statement.

Together with his twin brother Oliver, Šarkić played in every youth youth category of the Montenegrin national team before becoming a senior international. His last game was ten days ago against Belgium in Brussels, the city where he made his first football steps in the academy of Anderlecht.

After Anderlecht, he moved to Aston Villa, with loan spells at Wigan, Stratford and Livingston (Scotland), before signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. He excelled on loan at Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Stoke, and last summer signed for Millwall, where he made 33 appearances.

"Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26. Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija's family and friends at this immensely sad time," said Millwall in a club statement.
