The first multi-purpose stadium in Switzerland, St. Jakob-Park is home to Swiss Super League giants Basel, and also regularly stages international matches and concerts. The venue opened in March 2001, with the surrounding complex also boasting a shopping centre, restaurants and a retirement home.

The 'Joggeli' (as the people of Basel call their stadium) was the venue for the 2016 UEFA Europa League final, in which Sevilla beat Liverpool 3-1. It also staged six games during UEFA EURO 2008, including the opener, in which co-hosts Switzerland lost 1-0 to Czechia, plus Germany's dramatic 3-2 semi-final win against Türkiye.

Things to do in Basel

• Together with the Mittlere Brücke (Middle Bridge), the Basler Münster (Basel Minster) is the city's most famous landmark. Built between 1019 and 1500 with elements of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, its red sandstone walls, colourful roof tiles and twin towers dominate central Basel.

• Plenty of local festivals help to bring summer atmosphere to Basel, which has been called the most Mediterranean city north of the Alps. First is Summerblues, then the Basel Tattoo and the Im Fluss series of concerts, with the stage right next to the River Rhine, where thousands of music lovers take a dip in the summer months.

• Of all the Swiss cities, Basel has the highest concentration of museums and galleries – around 40 of them, including museums dedicated to art, anatomy, medicine and cartoons. The city also stages the annual Art Basel fair, which brings collectors from around the world to Switzerland.
