Pedro Proença is a former referee with 17 years' experience officiating in the Portuguese league (1998-2015) and 12 as a FIFA match official (2003-2015). In 2012, he became the first referee to officiate the finals of both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA EURO in the same year and won the IFFHS Award for 'The World's Best Referee'.
Proença was elected president of Liga Portugal in 2015 with the objective of recovering its economic and financial sustainability. He was subsequently re-elected in June 2019 and unanimously reconfirmed in June 2023. In November 2023, he was appointed as president of the European Leagues.
A graduate in business administration, Proença also enjoyed a successful career as a businessman and insolvency administrator, which included him taking office at the General Council of the Portuguese Business Confederation.
