UEFA has today announced the names of the players shortlisted for the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League positional awards. The awards will honour the best Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward from the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League season, and will be presented during the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League group stage draw on Thursday 1 October.
The jury is comprised of the coaches from the 32 clubs which participated in the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, together with 55 journalists from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations, selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.
Both coaches and journalists were requested to select a shortlist of three players in each category by allocating respectively five points, three points and one point to each of them. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the journalists.
The three players who received the most points overall in each positional category, in alphabetical order, are:
GOALKEEPERS: Keylor Navas (Costa Rica – Paris Saint-Germain); Manuel Neuer (Germany – FC Bayern München); Jan Oblak (Slovenia – Club Atlético de Madrid)
DEFENDERS: David Alaba (Austria – FC Bayern München); Alphonso Davies (Canada – FC Bayern München); Joshua Kimmich (Germany – FC Bayern München)
MIDFIELDERS: Thiago Alcántara (Spain – FC Bayern München); Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium – Manchester City FC); Thomas Müller (Germany – FC Bayern München)
FORWARDS: Robert Lewandowski (Poland – FC Bayern München); Kylian Mbappé (France – Paris Saint-Germain); Neymar (Brazil – Paris Saint-Germain)

UEFA Women’s Champions League
For the first time this year, UEFA will honour the best Women’s Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward from the 2019/20 UEFA Women’s Champions League season.
For the women’s positional awards, the shortlist of three players was selected by a jury composed of the coaches of the eight clubs which participated in the 2019/20 UEFA Women’s Champions League final tournament in Spain. Twenty journalists specialising in women’s football and selected by the ESM group are also part of the jury.
Similarly to the men’s accolade, coaches and journalists were requested to select a shortlist of three players by allocating respectively five points, three points and one point to each of them. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the journalists. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team.
The three players who received the most points overall in each positional category, in alphabetical order, are:
GOALKEEPERS: Sarah Bouhaddi (France – Olympique Lyonnais); Christiane Endler (Chile – Paris Saint-Germain); Sandra Paños (Spain – FC Barcelona)
DEFENDERS: Lucy Bronze (England – Olympique Lyonnais, now at Manchester City Women FC); Lena Goeßling (Germany – VfL Wolfsburg); Wendie Renard (France – Olympique Lyonnais)
MIDFIELDERS: Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir (Iceland – Olympique Lyonnais, formerly at VfL Wolfsburg); Dzsenifer Marozsán (Germany – Olympique Lyonnais); Alexandra Popp (Germany – VfL Wolfsburg)
FORWARDS: Delphine Cascarino (France – Olympique Lyonnais); Pernille Harder (Denmark – VfL Wolfsburg, now at Chelsea FC Women); Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands – Arsenal Women FC)

UEFA Europa League
UEFA has also announced the shortlist for the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League Player of the Season award, to be presented during the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League group stage draw, which will take place on Friday 2 October in Nyon.
The jury for this award was composed of the coaches of the 48 clubs which participated in the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, together with 55 journalists from the ESM group. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.
Both coaches and journalists were requested to select a shortlist of three players by allocating respectively five points, three points and one point to each of them. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the journalists.
The three players who received the most points overall, in alphabetical order, are:
PLAYERS: Éver Banega (Argentina – Sevilla FC, now at Al-Shabab FC); Bruno Fernandes (Portugal – Manchester United FC); Romelu Lukaku (Belgium – FC Internazionale Milano)

These awards complement the UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards, which will also be presented at the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony.
For the first time this year, UEFA will also honour coaches who have had the biggest impact over the previous season with the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year and UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year awards.
The nominees for the overall men’s, women’s and coach’s awards will be announced next week.
