Bayer 04 Leverkusen have confirmed Roger Schmidt as their new coach for the 2014/15 season. The FC Salzburg trainer is an "ideal fit", according to sporting director Rudi Völler.

Schmidt has signed a two-year deal with the Werkself. His arrival means Sascha Lewandowski, currently serving as caretaker following the departure of Sami Hyypiä earlier this month, will step down to assume his preferred role as head of youth. Völler said: "We carefully observed the market and quickly focussed on Roger Schmidt. His style of football is an ideal fit for Bayer 04 Leverkusen."

The 47-year-old, who caught the eye in Germany while in charge of 2. Bundesliga outfit SC Paderborn, has been at the Salzburg helm since June 2012. Following a runners-up finish in his first campaign, the Austrian side stormed to the league title this term, wrapping it up with eight matches to spare, and also reached the UEFA Europa League round of 16.

"I am looking forward to the new challenge at a top club and am very happy that I will be working in the Bundesliga soon," said Schmidt.
