Reus lifts Dortmund, Bayern are held

Marco Reus's treble earned Borussia Dortmund a 3-2 win away to ten-man VfB Stuttgart, and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ended FC Bayern München's 19-game Bundesliga winning streak.

Marco Reus's hat-trick ensured that Borussia Dortmund reclaimed second place in the Bundesliga while FC Bayern München's 19-game league winning streak came to an end against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Chinedu Obasi scored one and set up Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for the other as FC Schalke 04 prevailed 2-0 at home to Hertha BSC Berlin on Friday to steal a march on Dortmund – and they looked set to cling onto second after Jürgen Klopp's side went 2-0 down inside 20 minutes at VfB Stuttgart. Christian Gentner pounced on a defensive mistake before Martin Harnik tapped in after superb work from Ibrahima Traoré.

Reus then came to the rescue, however, finishing from Jonas Hofmann's ball after 30 minutes and converting from the spot after Georg Niedermeier was dismissed for a foul on Robert Lewandowski in the box, before clinching the points with a deflected shot seven minutes from time. With fourth-ranked Bayer 04 Leverkusen drawing 1-1 at home to rock-bottom TSV Eintracht Braunschweig, it was a result that further strengthened Dortmund's position in the chase for a UEFA Champions League berth.

Bayern had claimed the title on Tuesday with a 3-1 triumph at Hertha but were somewhat upstaged by Hoffenheim as they returned home to Munich. Anthony Modeste fired the visitors in front but Claudio Pizarro struck twice either side of a Xherdan Shaqiri effort to put Josep Guardiola's team 3-1 up. However, Sehad Salihović replied for Hoffenheim before the interval and Roberto Firmino levelled 15 minutes from the end.

Elsewhere, a Naldo strike from fully 40 metres earned VfL Wolfsburg, in fifth, a 2-1 victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FSV Mainz 05 kept up their chase for a European spot with a 3-0 home win against FC Augsburg. SC Freiburg got the better of fellow strugglers 1. FC Nürnberg in the late game, Felix Kraus's 65th-minute effort securing a 3-2 home success.
