Bueno sets Sporting record

Carlos Bueno made a little bit of Portuguese history at the weekend after the Uruguayan scored four goals in 19 minutes for Sporting Club de Portugal.

Having failed to score in 12 league outings for Paris Saint-Germain FC in the 2005/06 season, the former CA Peñarol star may have felt his career in Europe was destined to end badly, but a loan move to Sporting this season gave the 17-times capped international a second chance to shine. Up until his appearance as a substitute 58 minutes into Saturday's game at home against CD Nacional, it looked like Bueno was once more destined to disappoint. With Sporting a goal down, Bueno equalised on 75 minutes and then scored three more times before the final whistle as the Lisbon side won 5-1.

"In the history of football there are very few players who have experienced scoring four goals in a single game," said Sporting coach Paulo Bento. True enough, the last time a Sporting player scored four in one match came when Jorge Cadete did just that in a 5-1 win against CF União da Madeira in the 1991/92 season. Back in 1973/74, Yazalde trumped Bueno's effort by scoring four goals in the space of 13 minutes, but the Uruguayan can at least claim one small piece of club history as exclusively his own - no other player had scored so many goals as a substitute before.

'Very happy'
Bueno was understandably thrilled with his goalscoring feat. "He's very happy because he hadn't managed to score a goal in the Portuguese Liga so far," explained the player's agent Daniel Delgado. "He told me that all that day-to-day effort does pay off in the end." Regardless, Paulo Bento has warned Bueno that "he cannot think that he has done all the work he needs to do". After all, Sporting are still three points adrift of league leaders FC Porto and doubtless the coach will be expecting five goals when Sporting take on FC Paços de Ferreira in their next league game.
