Porto, Sporting off to a flier

Members

UEFA Champions League contenders FC Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal both started with home victories as the Portuguese league season began.

Quaresma blow
Defending champions FC Porto recorded a narrow 2-1 victory over UD Leiria as new coach Jesualdo Ferreira, who replaced Co Adriaanse in the summer, got off to a winning start. First half goals by Brazilian striker Adriano and Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma helped to set Porto up, but they finished the match struggling as Leiria pulled one back via Moddou Sougout and Quaresma ended up fracturing his jaw, leaving him out of action for the next few weeks.

Porto rally
In Estádio José Alvalade, Sporting Clube de Portugal faced a stiff test against Boavista FC, who dominated the first half and went ahead through Zé Manel. Porto were on the back foot, yet streaked clear after the break thanks to a goal by winger Nani and a brace from Deivid. Boavista pulled one back as Zé Manel netted again but Porto held on for a 3-2 win. Boavista were reduced to ten men after 70 minutes when midfielder Ricardo Sousa was dismissed four minutes after coming on as a substitute. Portugal's other UEFA Champions League representatives, SL Benfica, had their opening match postponed.
