News round-up: RC Deportivo La Coruña midfield player Juan Carlos Valerón will be out for up to eight months after tearing cruciate knee ligaments.

RC Deportivo La Coruña midfield player Juan Carlos Valerón could be out for up to eight months after after tearing cruciate ligaments in his left knee during Sunday's Spanish Primera División match against RCD Mallorca. Valerón was carried off with two minutes remaining and will undergo extensive medical tests on Monday. He had been in excellent form and appeared close to returning to the Spanish national team, but now seems certain to miss the FIFA World Cup in June.

Manchester United FC are to send Paul Scholes to see a second eye specialist in an attempt to discover what is causing the midfielder's blurred vision. The former English international sustained a blow to the head against Birmingham City FC in late December and has not played since. "It will be good to get a second opinion as it's been a few weeks and we need to find a remedy," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "We are purely guessing what is wrong. It is unusual because the first specialist he saw is regarded as one of the best in the world."

The semi-finals of the French League Cup will feature a Riviera derby after AS Monaco FC were drawn against OGC Nice in the last four. The other tie pits AS Nancy-Lorraine against Le Mans UC 72. The matches will take place on 7 and 8 February, with the final on 22 April at the Stade de France. The winners advance to the 2006/07 UEFA Cup.
