Winter stutter
The 42-year-old replaced BV Borussia Dortmund-bound Bert van Marwijk last July and presided over a promising start to the campaign, the Rotterdam side tallying 22 points from nine matches. After a pre-Christmas stutter, Gullit reinforced his squad with six players, paying immediate dividends as Feyenoord won eight games in succession to climb to second, only for a return of six points from the final seven matches to see them finish fourth.
Leading scorers
Despite scoring more goals than any other Dutch top flight team - 90, with Dirk Kuijt hitting 29 and Salomon Kalou 20 - Feyenoord's defensive frailties cost them and they ended the season 25 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven. "It's always sad to part with your coaches," said Feyenoord president Jorien van den Heri, who also saw Gullit's assistant Zeljko Petrovic leave. "However, it was a wise decision made in the interests of the club."
UEFA Cup
Feyenoord were eliminated from the UEFA Cup in the round of 16 by eventual finalists Sporting Clube de Portugal, but will return to compete for a trophy they last won in 2002 next season.
