Real Madrid CF gained a Spanish Cup win but RC Deportivo La Coruña were not so fortunate.

By Andy Hall

RC Deportivo La Coruña, Real Racing Club de Santander, Albacete Balompié, Málaga CF, RCD Mallorca, Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Levante UD all lost Spanish Cup second-round ties to lower division opposition on Wednesday night but Real Madrid CF, Athletic Club de Bilbao, Sevilla FC, CA Osasuna, Getafe CF, CD Numancia and Real Betis Balompie made the last 16.

Solari success
Madrid suffered to gain their 2-1 extra-time win against CD Tenerife with Borja Fernández and Fernando Morientes both taken off injured. Cristo Marrero put the islanders ahead on 42 minutes, deflecting in a free-kick from Daniel Fagiani. Madrid responded immediately, Santiago Solari drilling in a superb free-kick from distance, and the Argentinian scored the same way to win the game in the last minute of extra time.

Peregón ousts Depor
Depor fell behind against Elche CF on nine minutes to a Roberto Peregón goal and could not recover. Meanwhile, Racing took an early lead against Real Valladolid but David Sousa and Aritz Aduriz scored early in the second half to defeat the top-flight side. Levante suffered a similar 2-1 exit at UEA Gramenet, Micky Albert hitting the winner on 77 minutes just moments before opening goalscorer Jofre was dismissed for the visitors.

Málaga humbled
Mallorca, the last club to win the cup out of this year's pretenders, suffered a 2-1 defeat by UD Lanzarote while Málaga lost 5-2 to Lorca Deportiva CF and Albacete bowed out after losing 1-0 to RC Recreativo de Huelva. Real went out on penalties against CD Mirandés following a goalless 120 minutes, but Numancia triumphed 4-3 on spot-kicks against Córdoba CF after a 1-1 draw.

Osasuna relief
Osasuna needed extra time to beat Girona CF 1-0, while all three goals in Getafe's 2-1 win at Pontevedra CF were also scored in the additional half-hour. Athletic won 2-1 at Cultural y Deportivo Leonesa, again in extra time, but Sevilla were able to beat CF Ciudad de Murcia by the same score in 90 minutes and Betis won 2-0 at Cadiz. On Thursday night Club Atlético de Madrid, minus the injured Fernando Torres, travel to Gimnàstic de Tarragona.
