End of the road for Atlético's Gómez

Members

Club Atlético de Madrid's Argentinian defender Juan Gómez has been forced to retire through injury.

Ankle injury
Gómez, a €9m signing from Real Sociedad de Fútbol in 2000, has been sidelined for two years by a serious ankle injury. The former CA River Plate and AA Argentinos Juniors player spent the summer working on his rehabilitation at home in Argentina but has now been compelled to accept that his career is over.

Medical results
"I felt good, but when I saw the latest medical results I made my decision and told the club," he said. Gómez joined Real in 1996 and made 113 appearances for the club before his transfer to Atlético. In all, he played 36 times for the Madrid outfit before injury struck in June 2001.
