Italy round-up: Three earn Champions League chance

AC Milan, Internazionale FC and S.S. Lazio all sealed places in next season's UEFA Champions League with victories on the penultimate day of the Serie A season.

First-half strikes
Second-placed Inter were 2-0 winners away to Modena FC, taking the lead after 28 minutes through a Simone Pavan own goal, before Sierra Leone international striker Mohamed Kallon sealed the win, adding a second eight minutes later.

Penalty opener
Milan, who defeated their local rivals in the semi-finals of the Champions League in midweek, were 3-1 winners at home to Bologna FC, taking the lead midway through the first half when Andrea Pirlo converted a penalty after Clarence Seedorf had been brought down.

Seedorf involved again
Seedorf then doubled the lead with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area five minutes after half-time, before Filippo Inzaghi lobbed a third six minutes past the hour. Mourad Meghni pulled a goal back for the away side two minutes later, but Milan held on, despite Bologna goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca saving Inzaghi's late penalty.

Lazio take fourth
Lazio secured fourth place with a 3-1 win against Brescia Calcio despite falling behind to Roberto Baggio's 20th-minute strike, as the Brescia playmaker latched on to a defence-splitting pass from Stephan Appiah to score with a shot on the turn.

Quick goals
Lazio were level before half-time as Sinisa Mihajlovic converted a 39th-minute penalty before Brazilian defender César Rodrigues put the home side in front a minute before the interval. Argentinian striker Claudio López confimed the win nine minutes from time.

Juventus defeated
Meanwhile, champions Juvents FC, who will meet Milan in the Champions League final on 28 May, fielded an under-strength side and slipped to a 2-1 defeat at struggling Reggina Calcio, who took the lead through David Di Michele. Although Juventus were level six minutes later as Marcelo Zalayeta capitalised on an error from goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi, the home side scored the winning goal six minutes after half-time when striker Emiliano Bonazzoli headed a corner into the net at the far post.

Piacenza relegated
At the bottom of the table, Piacenza FC will join already-relegated Torino Calcio and Como Calcio in Serie B next season as Parma AC recovered from 0-2 down at home. Two goals in six first-half minutes from Enzo Maresca and Dario Hubner seemed to have earned the away side a win, but Parma retaliated after half-time through Alberto Gilardino and Adriano before Adrian Mutu scored a last-minute winner to seal Piacenza's fate.

Tense final week
The final relegation place will be taken by Reggina, Modena or Atalanta BC, who were 2-1 winners against Como thanks to two Cristiano Doni strikes, with the winner coming from the penalty spot ten minutes from time. Atalanta moved level with Reggina on 35 points, with Modena two points ahead.

Chievo held
Elsewhere, Torino drew 1-1 at home to Empoli FC, AC Chievo Verona drew 0-0 at home to AS Roma, while late goals from Marek Jankulovski and Martin Jorgensen gave Udinese Calcio a 2-0 win at AC Perugia.
