Malta round-up: Sliema take pole position

Members

Sliema Wanderers FC did their title ambitions no harm by taking top spot from Valletta FC.

Doncic second
Sliema coach Edward Aquilina's shrewd summer signings seem to be paying dividends at last. Captain Noel Turner scored the first from the penalty spot on 79 minutes after Valletta's Ivan Zammit had brought down Nenad Veselji. Seven minutes later, Danilo Doncic added a second after Veselji had gone past three Valletta defenders and goalkeeper Sean Sullivan to square the ball to his onrushing team-mate.

Two off
On Sunday, champions Hibernians FC got their season back on course with a 3-0 victory over Hamrun Spartans FC. Despite Hamrun having two defenders sent off in the first half, Hibernians took their time to take the lead. Two minutes after the interval, Miguel Mifsud put Hibernians in front before Nigerian Ndubisi Chuckunyere capped things off with goals in the 73rd and 87th minutes.

Precious point
Earlier in the day, Floriana FC and Pietà Hotspurs FC played out a drab goalless draw. Floriana will be the happier of the sides, having gained another precious point in their attempt to avoid the relegation zone.

Galea double
On Saturday, Birkirkara FC had temporarily joined Valletta at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 success over Mosta FC. Birkirkara made sure of the win with a double from striker Michael Galea in the first half, either side of a goal from Chucks Nwoko.

Historic win
Also on Saturday, newcomers Marsaxlokk FC claimed their first three points of the season - and their first ever Premier League triumph. The Seasiders beat Marsa FC 3-1 with goals from Carmel Formosa, Czech Petr Bartes and Minabo Asechemie.
