England: Newcastle go third

Newcastle United FC went third in the FA Premiership with a 1-0 defeat of Derby County FC while Southampton FC won to climb off the bottom.

Newcastle United FC moved into third place in the FA Premiership with a 1-0 win against Derby County FC on Saturday.

Penalty spot
Former England captain Alan Shearer scored from the penalty spot after French striker Laurent Robert was brought down in the 30th minute at St James' Park stadium, but Newcastle had goalkeeper Shay Given to thank for their win.

Fabulous goalkeeping
The Republic of Ireland international made a string of superb saves to hold struggling Derby at bay and became a hero when he saved a Fabrizio Ravanelli penalty after Andy O'Brien was adjudged to have fouled the Italian striker inside the penalty area.

On the rebound
In the London derby at Upton Park, Tottenham Hotspur FC claimed a 1-0 victory over West Ham United FC. Goalkeeper David James, making his belated debut for West Ham after being injured in England's August friendly with the Netherlands, did his best to keep Spurs at bay, but after he pawed Gustavo Poyet's shot against the post on 50 minutes, he could do nothing to stop Les Ferdinand thumping home the rebound.

Historic first for Southampton
It was an altogether happier occasion at St Mary's stadium as Southampton FC claimed their first victory at their new ground with a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic FC. Marian Pahars's glancing header from James Beattie's 59th-minute cross was enough to secure a valuable victory that lifts Southampton off the bottom of the table.

Great stop
Fulham FC's Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was the hero at the Reebok stadium after an acrobatic save denied Kevin Nolan's first-half effort to earn the newly promoted side a 0-0 draw.

Drab draw
It also finished goalless in the matches between Chelsea FC and Blackburn Rovers FC, and Leicester City FC and Everton FC. It was Everton's third successive draw and also the ninth time this season that Leicester had failed to score.
