Borussia Dortmund claimed the first league and cup double in their 103-year history as Robert Lewandowski hit a hat-trick in a comprehensive 5-2 German Cup final victory against FC Bayern München.
Shinji Kagawa and Mats Hummels scored Dortmund's first two, while Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry responded for Bayern who stumbled badly in their final outing before next week's UEFA Champions League final against Chelsea FC, whose manager Roberto Di Matteo watched from the stands alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Kagawa broke the deadlock after just three minutes when a mistimed pass to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer by Luiz Gustavo enabled Jakub Błaszczykowski to steal in ahead of the Bayern No1 and cross for the Japanese international to turn the ball into an empty net.
The Bavarian club responded 20 minutes later as Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller felled Mario Gomez and Robben calmly equalised from the penalty spot. The momentum seemed to be swinging Bayern's way as Hummels was forced to clear Philipp Lahm's shot off the line and Weidenfeller limped off to be replaced by Australian keeper Mitchell Langerak.
But Dortmund were ahead again when Jérôme Boateng fouled Błaszczykowski and Hummels buried the spot kick against his former team, despite Neuer getting a hand to the penalty.
It seemed as though a one-goal advantage would be taken into the break but in the second minute of first-half added time Kagawa fed Lewandowski and the Polish international placed the ball through Neuer's legs.
On 58 minutes Lewandowski converted Kevin Grosskreutz's excellent assist following a devastating counterattack, and although Ribéry reduced the deficit, Dortmund had the last word as Lewandowski struck again with nine minutes remaining to secure the most emphatic of doubles.
"It was a cup final which we couldn't have imagined going any better," said Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp. "We were ice-cool and scored some great goals. I simply don't have the words for what the team did today, to describe my feelings.
"We will see in the years to come whether anyone will be able to outperform our achievements of this season. We proved that we are a really good team and tonight we are just going to enjoy ourselves."
