Real Madrid CF reached a record-breaking century of Liga points after an emphatic 4-1 triumph versus RCD Mallorca, while Málaga CF secured a UEFA Champions League berth thanks to a 1-0 win against Real Sporting de Gijón.
Manuel Pellegrini's side needed a point to finish fourth, but José Rondón's 11th league strike this term secured all three and ended a run of two consecutive defeats. Madrid's title-winning campaign ended in style, meanwhile, as Mesut Özil scored twice after goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema had given the hosts a commanding lead against Mallorca.
A dramatic finish at the bottom ended with Villarreal CF's 14-year stay in the top flight coming to a close after a last-gasp 1-0 reverse against UEFA Europa League winners Club Atlético de Madrid. Real Zaragoza and Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, who downed Getafe CF and Granada CF respectively, were thus able to clamber to safety.
Elsewhere, Levante UD overcame Athletic Club 3-1 to finish sixth, while the game between RCD Espanyol and Sevilla FC ended 1-1. Real Racing Club's miserable season concluded with a 4-2 defeat against CA Osasuna.
