Patrick Herrmann scored twice as VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach moved within a point of leaders FC Bayern München by beating them 3-1 on Friday evening.
Mönchengladbach laid the foundations for their outstanding campaign to date with a 1-0 victory at the Fußball Arena München on the opening weekend of the season, and they rose to second off the back of this second victory against Bayern courtesy of Marco Reus's opener and Herrmann's double.
The hosts took the lead when Reus, who announced in the winter break he would be joining Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, found an unguarded net following a miscued clearance by Manuel Neuer and Herrmann made it 2-0 before the break after striding away from the visitors' defence.
Herrmann beat the offside trap and rounded Neuer to extend their advantage with 19 minutes remaining and although Bastian Schweinsteiger's reply threatened a comeback, Bayern's run of three successive league wins came to a comprehensive end.
