UEFA joins the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and European football in mourning the death of former referee and experienced UEFA official Gerhard Kapl, who has passed away at the age of 64.

Vice-president of the ÖFB since 2003, and head of its refereeing committee from 2004 onwards, Kapl worked for UEFA as a disciplinary inspector and stadium expert as well as serving as a match delegate. He was UEFA's chief disciplinary inspector from 2006 to 2011. Prior to that, he had been a well-respected referee, officiating at almost 200 domestic games and 40 more internationally. He had three children and the same number of grandchildren.

ÖFB president Leo Windtner said: "Austrian football has lost one of its most respected personalities at national and international level. Our sincere thanks go to someone who was a referee and later dedicated himself to football administration. Our sympathy in these difficult hours goes to his family, who always supported him in his time-consuming activities."
