SC Freiburg lifted themselves to within three points of the UEFA Champions League places in Germany thanks to a 1-0 triumph at struggling VfB Stuttgart, and there was success too for bottom side VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach as they energised their survival prospects with a win.
Johannes Flum won the match for Freiburg courtesy of a right-footed finish on 24 minutes after being set up by Maximilian Nicu. His goal left Robin Dutt's sixth-placed side three points shy of FC Bayern München in third, while also consigning second-bottom Stuttgart to their first defeat of 2011.
Mönchengladbach are now level on points with Stuttgart, and six from safety, after they celebrated their second victory in three outings by winning 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt. Igor De Camargo made the difference for the visitors with six minutes remaining.
