Hodgson named West Brom head coach

Premier League strugglers West Bromwich Albion FC have installed the vastly experienced Roy Hodgson as replacement for boss Roberto Di Matteo who was dismissed on Sunday.

Premier League side West Bromwich Albion FC have appointed Roy Hodgson as head coach on a contract until June 2012.

The 63-year-old replaces Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked last weekend following the West Midlands club's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City FC – their 13th loss in 18 matches.

Voted England's manager of the year in 2010 by the League Managers' Association in recognition of his work in guiding Fulham FC to the UEFA Europa League final, Hodgson was dismissed by Liverpool FC last month having taken charge at Anfield in the summer. His new team lie 17th in the top-flight table.

Caretaker coach Michael Appleton will remain at the helm for Saturday's home encounter with fellow Premier League strugglers West Ham United FC, before Hodgson takes the reins for the local derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on 22 February.
