Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund signed off for the winter break with a rare 1-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, on a day when Raúl González struck a hat-trick for resurgent FC Schalke 04.
Dortmund travelled to Frankfurt looking for an eighth consecutive league win but found their momentum halted by an 87th-minute winner from Fanis Gekas, whose 14th effort this term hauled him clear at the top of the scoring charts. The setback was the first for Jürgen Klopp's men since the opening day of the season and it meant their lead was cut to ten points, with 1. FSV Mainz 05 moving second by prevailing 4-2 at FC St Pauli, André Schürrle scoring twice.
Third-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen will aim to reduce the gap even more when they host SC Freiburg on Sunday, though Hannover 96 failed to profit as they succumbed 3-1 at 1. FC Nürnberg. As for Schalke, they celebrated a fourth win in five Bundesliga outings courtesy of Raúl's treble in a 3-0 defeat of third-bottom 1. FC Köln.
Elsewhere, Edin Džeko grabbed an added-time equaliser for VfL Wolfsburg in a 2-2 draw with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and SV Werder Bremen lost 2-1 at home to 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
