Article body
Inzaghi opener
Milan went ahead in the 39th minute when Andrea Pirlo's free-kick flashed off the head of Filippo Inzaghi and beat Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo. Brazilian Kaka doubled the lead seconds after the break with a header from Gennaro Gattuso's cross to put Carlo Ancelotti's side in the driving seat.
Shevchenko strike
Milan have not lost away to Inter since January 1998 and Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko ensured their unbeaten record continued when he combined with Cafu before firing in the third. A stunning strike from Obafemi Martins was little more than a consolation for Inter, who slip to sixth in the standings.
Late penalty
Juventus needed an 81st-minute penalty from David Trezeguet to claim all three points from their home game against Bologna FC. Mark Iuliano's opener was cancelled out by Giuseppe Signori's penalty for the visitors and a draw seemed the likely outcome until Gianluca Zambrotta was fouled in the Bologna box.
Parma rise
AS Roma occupy third place after a goalless draw at AC Siena and are joined on eleven points by Parma AC, who won 1-0 at home to Sampdoria UC thanks to an Adriano header. S.S. Lazio are a point behind in fifth after Sinisa Mihajlovic's deflected free-kick saw off AC Chievo Verona at the Stadio Olimpico.
Heavy defeats
At the other end of the table, there were heavy defeats for Ancona Calcio, Empoli FC and US Lecce. New coach Nedo Sonetti saw Ancona ship three goals without reply at home against Udinese Calcio, for whom Dino Fava Passaro scored twice. Empoli were beaten by the same scoreline at home against Modena FC, who had goalkeeper Marco Ballotta sent off in the 16th minute.
Caracciolo treble
Brescia Calcio recorded their first win of the season with a 4-1 success at Lecce. Andrea Caracciolo's hat-trick was added to by Roberto Baggio four minutes from time.
Red cards
AC Perugia were the only team in the bottom five to avoid defeat, playing out a goalless draw with Reggina Calcio at the Renato Curi - meaning both sides are still searching for their first league victories of the campaign. Reggina striker David Di Michele and Perugia defender Souleymane Diamoutene were sent off in the closing stages.
