Former Hungary goalkeeper Márton Fülöp has died aged 32 after a long illness.
The 24-times capped custodian had not played since 2013 when he underwent surgery to have a tumour removed from his arm, discovered while he was under contract with Greek side Asteras Tripolis. He returned to Budapest for further treatment, but his first club, MTK Budapest, announced today that he had passed away.
Fülöp spent the bulk of his playing career in England, with Tottenham Hotspur bringing him to London in 2004. He did not make a Premier League appearance for Spurs, but pursued his ambitions with Sunderland, Ipswich Town and West Bromwich Albion, plus several other clubs where he went on loan.
"It is with much sadness that we have been informed of the passing of former Hungary national team goalkeeper Márton Fülöp," said the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) in a statement. "Márton made his international debut in 2005 and became a popular and respected squad member, gaining 24 caps for Hungary over the next six years. He returned to Hungary in 2013 and faced his battle with cancer with great bravery and dignity. We offer our deepest condolences to his family."
