Dundalk have been confirmed as champions of the Republic of Ireland for the second year in a row, the first time that the club have managed to retain their league title.
Stephen Kenny's side drew 1-1 away to Shamrock Rovers, a late goal from Richie Towell earning them the draw after Danny North had put Rovers – Kenny's previous club – ahead. That result, combined with the fact that second-placed Cork City could only draw away to Drogheda United , confirmed Dundalk as the 2015 champions, with three games to spare.
"We didn't play well on the night but it's just great to get the result we needed and to be champions with a couple of games to go is a great feeling," said manager Kenny. "We only lost one league game all season and that is a great effort. We won it but we won it in style."
Dundalk can now go on and win the double for the first time since 1988 as they face Cork City in the final of the FAI Cup at the Dublin Arena next month.
