Borussia Dortmund retained the German Super Cup by defeating FC Bayern München for the second year running.
Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured a 2-0 home win at the BVB Stadion Dortmund, where Jürgen Klopp's team also defeated Bayern 4-2 last year to avenge their loss in Munich 12 months earlier. It is Dortmund's fifth triumph in the Super Cup, equalling Bayern's record.
Both sides went into the game without full-strength squads. Dortmund, who finished as runners-up to Bayern in league and cup last season, were without FIFA World Cup winners Mats Hummels and goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben were amongst those absent from Pep Guardiola's side, who started with their summer signing from Dortmund, Robert Lewandowski.
Both sides had chances in the opening stages. Xherdan Shaqiri's effort from the edge of the box was kept out by BVB keeper Mitchell Langerak, before Oliver Kirch suffered the same fate at the other end against Bayern's number one Manuel Neuer. But Neuer was left helpless in the 23rd minute when Mkhitaryan unleashed a powerful strike from 11 metres that flew in to give the home side a deserved lead.
There was another setback for Bayern around the half-hour mark when Javi Martínez suffered a suspected cruciate ligament tear and had to be carried from the pitch on a stretcher. Within a minute of the restart, Lewandowski had a chance to level the scores, but he was denied by the onrushing Langerak.
Dortmund subsequently dominated proceedings and doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Aubameyang was given space in the box to head in Łukasz Piszczek's cross. He pulled out a Spiderman mask in celebration, although it was FCB who could have done with a superhero in the end.
"We defended incredibly well as a team and were uncomfortable opponents – that's exactly what we wanted," said Klopp. Both sides will enter the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in September, although their focus for now will be on the first round of the German Cup this weekend against lower-league opposition.
