Ronaldo reaches new milestone in Portugal win

Cristiano Ronaldo became Portugal's all-time leading scorer with 49 goals after opening and closing the scoring in a comfortable 5-1 friendly win against fellow FIFA World Cup finalists Cameroon in Leiria.

The Real Madrid CF forward started the night with 47 goals – sharing top spot in the historical rankings with Pedro Pauleta – but needed only 21 minutes to make the record his own. He chipped in with a second seven minutes from time in Portugal's last match before 19 May, when coach Paulo Bento will name his 23-man squad to travel to Brazil.

With youngsters Rafa Silva and Ivan Cavaleiro earning their first caps, Portugal began brightly, and Ronaldo eluded Olympique de Marseille's Nicolas N'Koulou with a first touch and then fired a powerful low shot from the edge of the box past Charles Itandje to break the deadlock. However, Jean Makoun set up FC Lorient's Vincent Aboubakar to level two minutes before half-time.

Undeterred, Portugal turned the screw after the restart. On 66 minutes Raul Meireles pounced on an error from Aurélien Chedjou to drive into an empty net and restore the hosts' advantage, before Cavaleiro invited Fábio Coentrão to make it 3-1 a minute later. Edinho tidied up after a Ronaldo effort to notch his side's fourth, then the No7 made the best of a loose ball to take his haul to 49.

Portugal play Greece at home in their next friendly on 31 May.
