Century up for Liechtenstein No1 Jehle

Goalkeeper Peter Jehle recently became the third player to reach a century of caps for Liechtenstein when he appeared in a friendly against Croatia in Vaduz.

Jehle, 31, had first donned the national team jersey on 14 October 1998 at the tender age of 16, before turning professional and becoming his country's undisputed No1. On debut – a home UEFA EURO 2000 qualifier against Azerbaijan – he and his team-mates made footballing history as Liechtenstein claimed their first competitive victory (2-1).

Jehle went pro in 2000, moving from local side FC Schaan to Grasshopper Club in Zurich, where he would win the Swiss Super League twice in six years. He has also played for two other foreign teams: Portugal's Boavista FC (2006–2008) and French outfit Tours FC (2008–2009). In 2009, he returned to Liechtenstein to join FC Vaduz and has been there ever since.

The custodian figured in little more than half of his milestone match against Croatia at the Rheinpark on 14 August – yet, as is often the case, he was constantly in the thick of the action. Typically assured and in control, he helped the Alpine nation go in at half-time drawing 1-1.

The contest, a fitting occasion for Jehle's 100th international, ended in a 3-2 loss although the hosts could consider themselves unlucky and the game should certainly live long in the memory of Liechtenstein fans.
