Manchester United FC said they were "shocked and deeply saddened" after it was announced that their former England defender Brian Greenhoff had died at the age of 60.
Greenhoff played over 200 league games for United from 1970 to 1979, and represented England on 18 occasions. Along with his older brother, forward Jimmy Greenhoff, he was a member of the United side that won the 1977 FA Cup under Tommy Docherty. "Everyone at Manchester United is shocked and deeply saddened by the news," read a club statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Brian's family at this difficult time."
Former Old Trafford team-mate Lou Macari said: "Brian loved playing for United, it was a dream come true for him. His only aim was to keep playing for United as long as he could and he was a true servant. I was only looking at pictures of us winning the FA Cup final the other day. He was jumping around all over the place and was as happy as Larry."
Greenhoff later represented Leeds United AFC and Rochdale FC, playing abroad in South Africa, Hong Kong and Finland.
