Former France and LOSC Lille striker Pierre Pleimelding passed away at the age of 60 on Wednesday.
Pleimelding will always be remembered in Lille for his long blond hair and the 21 goals he scored in the 1978/79 campaign, when the promoted side broke into Ligue 1's top six. That same season, 'Ploum' also made his one and only senior international appearance – in a 1-0 friendly defeat of Spain in November 1978.
Although Pleimelding is perhaps most fondly remembered at LOSC, he also counted AS Nancy-Lorraine, ES Troyes AC, AS Monaco FC, AS Cannes, FC Mulhouse, SAS Épinal and Servette FC among his former employers.
He then launched into a successful coaching career, mainly outside the top flight in the east of France. He held the Ivory Coast reins at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. Pleimelding, son of French international René Pleimelding, initially worked as both teacher and bank employee before making it as a footballer.
