Nikolić named new coach of Partizan

Marko Nikolić, 34, has been named coach of Serbian Super League leaders FK Partizan.

Nikolić's appointment, on a two-and-a-half-year contract, was confirmed after a meeting of Partizan's board of directors. It follows the resignation of Vuk Rašović, who will remain at the club in an undefined new role. Nikolić is Partizan's ninth coach in little more than six years, though they have been Serbian champions throughout.

"We have looked at him over the past two years, but now is a good time for us to work together," said Partizan president Dragan Djurić. "Nikolić has a lot of qualities, including his work with youth players. I wish him a warm welcome to hell because I know how hard working at Partizan is compared to other clubs."

Nikolić started in a youth coaching capacity at FK Rad, where he rose through the ranks to the senior team dugout. He had subsequent spells with FK Vojvodina and Serbia's Under-18s, as well as another stint at Rad. "I know what is expected of us here," said Nikolić. "I believe this team can finish top of the championship once again."

Partizan are a point ahead of Belgrade rivals FK Crvena zvezda at the head of the Serbian top flight. The league returns from its winter break on 23 February.
